Droppin an exclusive type joint here. Craig G still does some doubles, back to backs, but on this tape brings the flava the exclusive DJ. Craig G was one of the top DJ's in the 90's along with Clue, Doo Wop, S&S, droppin the Exclusive tapes. He was one of the DJ's that if you saw a new tape from him, you could cop it off the name alone and knew you were going to get some quality music.

A few highlights on here is a 2pac song dissing the hell out of Biggie on side A and no it's not hit em up. And then there is a Sauce Money and Jay Z track that I am not too familiar with on Side B. I remember a handfull of songs they had floating around on mixtapes in 96 and 97 but I do not remember this one.

Dirty Harry - Tape #7 - Off the Hook High Noon '96

Dirty Harry is easily my favorite mixtape DJ. I can tell you the exact spot I was at when I first popped Fistfull of Dollas into my walkmen on my walk home from high school in the fall of '96 and was completely blown away. Yeah, that tape has many memories.

But onto this tape right here. I get confused with name of this tape but what I have on the tape is off the hook pt.1. So I hope that's what this is but regardless, it's classic Dirty Harry. Crazy blends, the hiphop inst. with the r&b accapella(something for the fellas and the ladies), the rap figures kicking it off on side b which was something I always looked forward to, the vocals to the inst. coming in and out every so many bars, a mixtape with mad crazy flavor. There is so much going on in the tape but it's not over bearing and it all works perfectly. I can keep on going but then I will seem like more of a Stan. With every listen you can always pick up something new from a Dirty Harry tape. This one here is no exception.

DJ Mondee - Flossin (1999)

So I stole (not really) this tape from the homie DJ Truskills. How this ended up in Truskills hands from what I remember is that the MHz had brought back this tape with them from one of many trips to NY for recording sessions or whatever business they had to handle.

I am familiar of Mondee for his sick production with Yak Balls but did not know he was dropping mixtapes back then as well. I always dug Mondess's cuts and grimy production on the Yak Balls 12"s with Fondle Em and Def Jux. So with that in mind, I figured this tape would be pretty solid and of course... it's pretty fresh!

The tape did not have a cover or tracklisting. Just know that this tape was made in '99 when indy hiphop was possibly at its peak or downfall, however you want to look at it. So this should give you an idea on the flavor of the tape.

DJ Inform - The Cutting Room

DJ Inform has been on the scene pretty strong for the past 5 years in Columbus Ohio. When I saw this, I figured it would sound like his previous mixtape that turned out to be one very funky mix. But after a listen, Inform caught me off guard. This is more of a DJ concept album with original production and Inform cutting everything he can get ahold of to add to the track. Inform is a dj that can rock a party and then go down to the next venue and perform a routine for the turntablist stans that are still out there and in my opinion, you can catch that vibe on this project right here.

Mhz 1st freestyle on Stretch and Bobbito show '98.

Man, talk about some Bustown history, well this about takes the cake. What we have right here is the 1st time that the MHz appeared on the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito show. This right here was just the beginning of many great things to happen for the hertz. This was a big step for Bustown Hiphop and the people involved to help make this happen make the story that much better (i just got an idea).

I am not going to write very much about this because I rather have someone that was there tell you the story of this night and all the events that lead up to this moment. But this is some shit that any Columbus emcee, Dj, anything hip hop related needs to download and keep in their library because this one freestyle session did alot for Columbus back in the day. I could keep going for days about this but like I said, I rather have someone else tell it that was physically there. Until then, enjoy the audio.

And much props to dj stepone for uploading this on his blog. As soon as I saw it I knew this was it. I called up the homie DJ Truskills to verify it. Once he told me that Supernatural was in the house as well, it was official.

Im still here OL' SKOOL!

So this mixtape shit is just getting bigger and better and more people are sharing their collections and stories. I absolutely love it and so I thought I would add my 2 cents. Started out cool but as time went on, it just seemed harder for me to commit to adding quality post on this blog. So I took a step back. One thing I was more focused on is uploading mixtapes from cassette but damn that takes forever. If I can get 90 mins. to spare, im taking a nap or working on music. Only few of yall out there know how crazy my schedule is and how crazy it gets around Ohio St. football season.

In the past few months I have moved all of my music into storage which was a huge mistake. I wanted more room but come to find out, I rather just have all the mess here. So that means my mixtapes and mix cd's are there and im just too lazy at the moment to make a few trips to get them here. I rather just do it all at once.

But I have started to get back into the swing of things of late and getting this music a full go again. So that means you will see some post here very soon and also a few mixes I have made recently.

but big shout to all the heads that are just flooding the net with great mixes.... tapemasta(who just will not stop...dude is p diddying this shit), pipomixes, ol skool rules, soul, diggers union, dj step one, rekordz on wheels, ... too many to name. I check all mixtape sites as much as possible.

This right here is a tape I made in 2002 from the tapes I recorded down in the Bernies Basement in the year of 2001. This tape captures alot of the fun we had down there and just the spontaneous events that would happen in the rat hole.

This tape includes freestyles and battles from the mhz, flip the early riser, metro, phizz ed, aqword, przm, bru lei, cj the cynic, plead da 5th, andrew bagadonuts, envelope, ak, and a gang of other folks who grabbed the mic on these nights.

Spitball Rockin IT 12" & Unreleased Przm material

June 10th, 2009 marks the 2 yrs. that przm passed away due to his heart condition that had effected him since his date of birth. Przm had a big impact on my life and he was one of the best friends I ever had.

Przm always wanted to have his music heard but at times that was hard for him due to his illness and some of his funny pet peeves about his music sounding a certain way.

The release I remember him being most excited about was the spitball rockin it 12" and the reason for that is on how it sounded. It was exactly how he wanted it. Intalec did the mixdowns and to those who know, Intalec is the king of the mixdown. It sounded good on vinyl too which was he wanted the most. There were days at the house were he would play the sptiball 12" and then play a dr. dre record right after that to compare the two.

Since the 12" was only on vinly(sometime later cd's of the 12" came into play but not many were handed out), I am putting up the 12" in mp3 format for your downloading pleasure becuase I know alot of people have told me they always wanted these songs but never had a record player. And I am also including some unreleased dj przm produced material from 2000. And some of Przm's early work from '97 when he lived in Pittsburgh with the Infintree.

Nice tape here of indy/underground joints from late '99. To me these cats were the top dogs when it came to the indy scene in mixtapes. There were a handfull of others but I felt they were the dj clue's of the indy mixtapes. But they showed and proved with skill, exclusive freestyles, and had the shit months before you could cop it.

Great tape here. This was tape 2 of a 3 tape series. The brooklyn academy freestyle at the beginning of this tape is worth the download alone. rugged raw shit!

Part 5 is a mixtape of exclusive joints!

D nasty and R.C. come together to drop a nice selction of new joints that were very exclusive in the nine seven when this cameout. I always thought it was funny they had quotes from magazines on the cover about this mixtape.

Nothing really fancy here, just a batch of new shit around the time of spring '97. But these tapes always kept you on your toes on being ontop of your shit. Before the days of the internet, you had to rely on dj's like these to bring you the music you would be getting your hands on a month or so from now. That's how it was in Columbus anyways. Always wanting to be hip to something before the next dj was.

Part of 4 is a mixtape of R&B

Before kayslay was smacking your favorite dj, he was dropping sick tapes of blends, reggae/dancehall, and r&b tapes like these. Its funny to hear this tape now after all the tough guy talk that he is famous for these days. I heard that while dropping tapes back then, he was still working as a bodyguard around this time. Not sure how true that is but that was the story I heard 12 years ago.

This is a pretty solid selection of tracks Kayslay came with. Copped this tape in '97. So it has some new tracks but then he also includes the classic joints as well. Kayslay on the mello tip...who woulda thought?

What more is to say of selecta BAM BAM? I really have never heard a better dancehall dj then this cat here. G.Brown has some treats but Bam Bam is just killin the comp. when it comes to this genre. His mix tapes never fail. You copped Bam Bam tapes off the strength of the name. You knew you were getting quality everytime.

This right here is a mix I got my hands on in '97 and one of my favorite mixtapes of all time. You just can't go wrong with this mix right here.

DJ Know1 is a dj coming out of Cleveland Ohio. I know he messed around in the scene up there, came down here to columbus and spun at many venues before moving to NYC a couple of years ago. Know1 made a name for himself with these inst. mixtapes in and To my knowledge he was the only one around columbus dropping these tapes and they were always onpoint.

This one here is no different then the others. This was the last of the series I copped from him. I believe this was one I copped in '03.

I am going to do one big drop right here. The mindset I am in is providing you a handfull of tapes that display the different varieties of the mixtape culture and why us old heads can't get enough of this shit. It's amazing to me all the varieties of ideas that dj's can use or come up with and not many today use this to their advantage. In the era of Serato dj's and the internet, in my opinion, it is very easy to be a versitle dj and the ones that are stick out. But there are so many that still focus on just one area.

I have 6 mixtapes lined up, thank god they are all on cd, and I hope you enjoy this drop of good music and dig why we do this.

Shazam X - Best of BCC '97

This mixtape is one of my all time favorites. It came out in early '97 so you know all the material is classic boot camp. To this day I have not heard a better put together mix of BCC material then this tape right here.

I do not know much about Shazam X but i do know his best of mixtapes are onpoint. I also have his krs-one/bdp tape. I remember seeing that he made a best of epmd tape and a best of a tribe called quest tapes in '97 as well. Why did I not buy them? I have no idea. I guess at 17 I was saving my money for bus fare or a bigmac meal. But hopefully somebody has these 2 and can upload them for the masses.

Tired as fuck but I stayed up to record this and make it available for the heads because I know yall would appreciate this one. Very soon, I will make sure I have better pics of the cover so you can read the tracklist. Sorry for the blurryness.

mixmaster ICE live on 107.5 2003

The legendary, hall of fame dj, mixmaster ICE, somehow made his way from NY to the cowtown that is columbus ohio. In that time he has been here he has hosted many events, dj'd all over the city, and at one time held down the old school blockparty show on power 107.5 every sunday night from 7pm-10pm. I believe the time frame on that was from '01 to '05. Could be wrong but close to accurate.

It was great to hear a legendary dj on the radio in Columbus because we never get shit like that, to this day. And on top of that, they were letting ICE have complete freedom, live mixing on the radio, radio at it's best with the actual dj in control.

This right here is a live mix from '03, the only show I still have on tape. I know I recorded more but seems like this is the only one I can come up with at the moment.

As far as what to expect, anything old school. This was in '03 so you are getting nothing but mid 90's and before. A good mix of r&b and classic hiphop. A great mix to vibe out to on a sunday afternoon cookout type of thing! Oh and to the suckers out there...do your HOMEWORK!!!

So enjoy my 1st tape to digital conversion! Many more to follow.

rob n hood - Best of Scarface

Scarface, I would have to say he is my favorite downsouth mc. His "face to face the world is yours"LP is easily in my top 10 hiphop lp's. I got that tape in rotation in my middle school years when it dropped and it just stays in rotation.

This mixtape is material from scarface's start with geto boys all the way up to material from the fix. I copped this tape sometime in '03 or '04 im guessing. Regardless, it's a double cd mix of one of the best to ever do it.

And this mix is onpoint as well. There is no crazy scratching or super insane intro but the mix does ride well and the songs actually blend together.

Crazy blend tape from '03. G Brown is one of the most talented dj's in the game today. His tapes are always onpoint and if you don't know about the pure fiyah, you're playing yourself.

I had to have this on here. This is a press kit print put together in 2000 for the super group Iskabibbles. It was basically every artist that was on the weightless roster.

The footage is from 3 different shows.

1. Scribble jam 2000 at top cats. I remember this was the show on a friday where they would not let us in because it was past capacity. But smooth words from daymon and having rj with us(his name was starting to ring bells with the rocket science 12"), got a handfull of us in that night.

2. HipHop expo 1999. There were alot of highlights at this expo...between copywrite in the battle, open wound destroying everybody in the battle, and the iskabibble performance, not sure which one would be the best highlight of the expo '99.

3. Bernies, the after scribble jam 2000 party. Atoms Fam and the MHz performed as well. This whole night was hype from the jump. You can tell when print and Illogic perform "favorite things" which at the time was the columbus classic for all of us. One of the standout tracks from Illogic's debut Unforeseen shadows.

take a good 20min. break and watch this shit, remember some great memories or just brush up on your columbus hiphop homework.

DJ Przm - Bust It vol.3

Przm made this mixtape in the spring of '03. Dude pretty much just went in his studio, sat down, and busted this mix out in one day. In my opinion, this is how a mixtape should sound. Back to backs, fast clean cuts, great selection of tracks, mixed together, something hitting you every few minutes, accapellas over insts., sounds dirty as fuck...lol. this tape is so damn dirty, I love it. To those that know how przm kept his records, you can tell by all the snappling and crackling you will hear. And alot of these records were only a few months old, LOL.

This mix sounds like it was made on 2 turntables but it was made on one. Not sure why one volume is lower then the other.....Im sure P did that on purpose.

And I would be here forever giving backgrounds, stories, all the info on this man. So as long as this blog is running, each post about Przm will be a piece of the story. I just can not cram it into one post or 5. There will be more to come.

DJ Self - F@#ky S#!t vol.1

This blog is as well a tool to document Columbus Hip Hop History past and present. I want to do this the right way but I am getting a slow start. So hopefully some good post will get things rolling for me.

Dj Self has been a familiar name in the Columbus scene for years. He was the dj that started Bernies sunday hiphop night in early '99 before passing it off to DJ Przm to go back home for personal matters. Self dj'd on OSU's kbux radio in the early years of this decade with partner in crime dj Projects. The saturday soul shakedown was a night Self held down for about a year at Skully's where he spun a variety of 80's breaks, hits, and whatever was funky in that era. If you can't tell by now, Self is a very versitle DJ and it show's it in this mix.

I could spit up more facts and stories of dj Self but instead I will throw up a mixtape, one of many I have in my collection, that has always been one of my faovrites from him. This is funky shit vol.1 that I got from him around '02 or '03. The title pretty much sums it up....just alot of funk, breaks, samples you will recognize, all mixed together in a very raw style.

4 Turntable Beatdown!!!

DJ Haul&Mason.... Did not know much about them before I heard this mix. Picked it up out of a free bin a few months ago at a local record store. Not sure why this was in a free bin because this mix is really onpoint. Anybody that can blend "hypnotize" with a big band and actually make it work? .... I am amazed. This mix goes all over the place and it works.

In the liner notes it says "we properly rock over 100 records in just under an hour using 4 turntables, cdj's, and effects unit." And this was done in a one take live mix on a tour in Japan in '04.

So where do I start?

I do not think Mick Boogie needs an introduction, but just incase, here is his introduction to the mixtape game plus an interview on the mixtape that started the madness!

pos: Going back 8 years ago, you had a real strong presence from spinning on 107.9 in Cleveland. What made you want to start tackling the mixtape circuit the way that you have?

Mick Boogie : I wanted a national name and didn't want to be pigeonholed by the weird tastes of the fickle Cleveland consumer... I felt I had a lot of creativity to offer...

pos: What did you use to record Numero Uno with compared to how you record mixtapes today?

MB: ...vinyl... real vinyl... and a few cds... It was recorded by D-Selecta in his basement... on a multi-track recorder... all pre-computer... Sidenote: my second mixtape was Certified Hot...same thing...multitrack and vinyl...but it was the the first time I worked with The Kickdrums...and one of their first productions ever... since then, we have both done so much based on this friendship and partnership...

pos: To my knowledge "the butters" is the college radio show where you got your start on radio. Did you record any shows/mixtapes and sell them?

MB: Never sold the shows...always free... that show made me who I was...both me and my homie Garbs... Anyone who has tapes of that digitalized, PLEASE contact me.

pos: I have seen you spin live 2 times and both times I was very impressed and so was the crowd at these jams. Do you have a certain set list of songs you stick to or do you just read and vibe with the crowd?

MB: Total vibe... I go all over the place... at this party I did Saturday, I played 60's rock, 70's disco, 80's synth pop, 90's hiphop and electro and dance ish from the 2000's... and had fun playing it all. And I ended the night with a song from the Wedding Singer. WHAT!

pos: When did you start using Serato?

MB: Hmm... like 5 years ago... My man Excel put me on to it... life change... I was the first guy in Cleveland using it... the look on deejays faces was so confusing at first... I'm glad the world uses it now tho.. it's amazing... I love the portability and creativity it offers...

pos: What are some of your favorite mixtapes past or present and who are the dj's that have inspired Mick Boogie? Who are the mixtape dj's you check for currently?

MB: Neil Armstrong's sample series are Amazing. Green Lantern of course. New deejays... my partner Terry Urban, DJ Benzi, my man Parler just did a DOPE Biggie Samples tape... I just like people doing DIFFERENT stuff and not playing 34 Gucci Mane songs.

This tape was my 1st introduction to Lovebug Starski. I knew he was one of the old school dj's and if I wanted to be a dj, Lovebug is someone I should be familiar with. So at 16, I got my first taste on how the dj's from the beginning of this art form Rocked. Lovebug not only spoke with his hands but he was very present on the mic, that's what impressed me the most with him.

This is also one of the 1st mixtapes that I owned that was in cd form. I got this sometime in spring of '97. I also had a DJ Hollywood tape from around the sametime but it is no longer in my collection for whatever reason.

What got me back into the Mixtape (if you can not read this, go 2 post up!)

It was around '98 I believe when I started to see artist I did not want to hear on my favorite mixtape dj's tapes. Doo Wop with Juvenille, S&S with Master P, etc. etc. That was not what I was trying to hear. I loved to get a tape and hear the rugged raw shit, not that shit. And believe me, I like the south but that's not what I was wanting to hear on my mixtapes. So basically, I steered away from that mixtape scene and followed only few Indy hiphop mixtape dj's. But they were not as creative to me as the core NY DJ with the blending new edition with some crazy drum break or some random 80's accapella with peter piper inst. Or just the party rocking skills of kid capri.

So basically when this Nas and Jay Z beef came about, I was interested as well was the whole hiphop community. So I Stumbled upon this mixtape in a store, saw the tracklisting, and bought it. Took it home at the Fonoslut Mansion and could not believe my ears. There was mixing, the tape put together as a whole was onpoint, I heard blends, cuts, it was what I had not heard coming from NY in years. I am sure it was but I just must have been missing out here in Columbus.

It almost seems to me these days the internet has even phased this part of the DJ out. That's what made this mixtape so unique to me. In these days, you just take it to the net, Fuck a DJ. Remember when 50 made mixtapes dissin JA? Could not wait to hear what this dude would come up with next. Now, you see cartoons, 50 with wigs on, and 5 diss tracks within 2 weeks and now im already burned out. Dude is a great comedian though.

So thank you Nas, Jay Z, and the Evil Genius himself, Green Lantern, for brigning the mixtape back into my life 8 years ago. This was the tape that did it for me and made dig for other mixtape dj's doing what I loved to hear.
